Overview: “To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.” – Victor Hugo

Primary grade level instruction in the art of language draws heavily from methods suited to the grammar stage of learning. However, students, being created in the image of God, are complex learners, calling for some intentional incorporation of teaching strategies from logic and rhetoric stages. Also critical is the perspective that education is not merely the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire—not so much a download of information as an upload of passion for that which is true, good, beautiful, and holy.

The Grade Level 6 Language Arts curriculum equips students with the skills of reading comprehension, writing, rhetoric, spelling, and grammar.  Instruction employs the general tools of learning—definition, memory, penmanship, phonetic decoding, reading comprehension, computation, critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, research, synthesis, effective writing, public speaking, and sound moral judgment.

Set includes:

Language Arts Teacher Text includes GL6 Language Arts scope and sequence, general instructions for how to use the teacher text and explanations for the components of language arts lessons, instructions for weekly use of vocabulary and spelling lessons and games, descriptions of the characteristics of a classical L Arts classroom, an introduction to classical methods of teaching grammar, writing and literature, and an explanation of the tools of learning and the classical Progymnasmata, or preliminary rhetorical exercises. Each Language Arts lesson includes student objectives, biblical worldview integration, a list of needed materials, an introduction, detailed daily instructional methods, assessments, and suggested lesson extensions and modifications. Teacher Text includes copies of student worksheets, answer keys, and grading rubrics.

Language Arts Student Text includes student worksheets, summaries and excerpts of literature selections, writing samples, grading rubrics, and a supplementary section to extend or enrich the materials in each unit.

Reading Strategies Handbook (GL3-6) | This handbook organizes an abundance of information about the complexities of reading and expectations for successful Grade Level 3-6 readers, as well as numerous graphic organizers for identifying plot, character, main ideas, cause and effect, prediction skills, vocabulary enrichment and story mapping.

Classical Academic Press’s Writing & Rhetoric series dynamically complements the language arts component of the Rafiki Education System, GL3-6. An adaptation of Writing & Rhetoric Book 1: Fable is available for use in Africa. Rafiki Foundation recommends the use of Classical Academic Press’s Writing & Rhetoric Collection for schools outside Africa. See book and grade level suggestions at this link:
