GL3 Art Overview: “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…” (Genesis 1:26).
God created us in his image to reflect his character. He loved being the Creator, and because humans are made in his image, we also have the gift of artistic activity and expression. The study of the arts, both its production and history, stimulates the mind and develops creativity.
This Grade Level 3 Art course is designed to provide students with opportunities to express themselves through the visual arts. The course reviews and builds on fundamental skills and elements taught in Grade Levels 1 and 2 Art courses. Each of the five units of study focuses on one of the five elements of art—line, shape, value, texture, and color. The curriculum is designed for anyone who desires to teach it and carefully reads and prepares for each lesson, whether an experienced art teacher or a novice. Background information on artists and art history, visual aids, and clear step-by-step methods and instructions are incorporated into every lesson.
Art Teacher Text (and Art Prints) includes an introductory section explaining the benefits and purposes of studying art, how to use the curriculum, instructions for using the art images and prints, suggestions for providing a classroom atmosphere conducive to creativity, tips for care of supplies and materials, and for managing student behavior. Each lesson includes student objectives, biblical worldview integration, list of materials needed, a scripted introduction paired with art images/prints, vocabulary words and definitions, detailed instructions for student activities and assignments, informal assessment questions, and possible extensions or modifications to the lesson. Also includes color prints of art reproductions, instructional material, and examples of student art assignments; reproduced on high quality card stock with a semi-gloss finish.
Cursive Alphabet Cards (5.5” X 8.5”) include 26 landscape-oriented cards displaying upper and lower case cursive letters accurately positioned with a dotted center line. These cards do not include key pictures or words.
Grammar Teacher Text includes an introduction explaining the philosophy and biblical worldview of the student, grammar instruction, and curriculum. It includes descriptions and explanations of how each aspect of the curriculum functions, including lesson structure, the use of chants and songs, worksheets, vocabulary lists, paragraphs and glossary, copy work and dictation, assessments, and resources needed for instruction. Each lesson is composed of student objectives, biblical worldview integration, a list of needed materials, an introduction, detailed instructional methods, possible lesson extensions, and informal and formal assessments. Also included in the text are grammar chants and songs arranged alphabetically, answers to student worksheets, and a copy of the student vocabulary lists, paragraphs, and glossary.

GL3 History Overview: In classical education, the study of history is the backbone of the curriculum. By studying history in chronological order and integrating other subjects to this core, students can bring order to their understanding of the world and the ways God has worked throughout history to accomplish his glorious purposes and plans. In Grade Level 3, students are taught about historical events, places, and people through engaging stories, arts and crafts, activities, and projects. The Grade Level 3 History course begins with an overview of the beginnings of civilization in Sumer and the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Assyria, Israel, Babylon, Greece, and Persia; other units cover the history of the Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, and the early church, with a focus on the intersections with the biblical history of the same time periods.
History Teacher Text and Resource Text includes guidelines and instructions for scheduling and teacher preparation, explanations for lesson components, and using the resources in the Appendix. Each lesson contains student objectives, biblical worldview integration, a list of needed materials, an introduction, vocabulary words and definitions, detailed methods for instruction and learning activities, informal assessments, and possible lesson extensions and modifications. The GL8 History Student Text is included as a teacher resource.
Literature Study Guides Teacher Text includes an introduction to classical methods of teaching language arts and literature as well as a breakdown of how to schedule the different components of the language arts curriculum. The literature study guides correspond with eight books Rafiki has chosen to teach as part of its GL3 Language Arts course in all Rafiki Schools. Titles include: A Chair for My Mother, by Eleanor Estes; A New Coat for Anna by Harriet Ziefert and Anita Lobel; Akimbo and the Lions by Alexander McCall Smith; Charlotte’s Web by E.B. The goal of Grade Level 3 Maths is to train students to think mathematically. Instruction pursues mastery through systematic sequencing of concepts explored in concrete, pictorial, and abstract terms. Concepts explored include mental math; addition and subtraction up to 1,000 with regrouping; measurement; multiplying by skip counting; use of repeated subtraction to divide; real world story problems; understanding, identifying and simplifying equivalent fractions; comparing fractions; graphic organizers, estimation, place value, number bonds, and bar models.
Each lesson follows the same pattern: calendar, counting, problem of the day, fact practice, conceptual review, new skill instruction, guided and independent practice, and review. Lessons are designed to be taught with minimal aid from student worksheets. Instruction is teacher-driven, inviting active student participation by means of demonstration, discussion, experimentation, and imitation.
Maths Teacher Text provides each lesson in the GL3 Math curriculum with student objectives, biblical worldview integration, a list of needed materials, assessment, suggestions for lesson extensions or modifications, and interactive scripts for daily lessons. Each lesson includes an opening review, lesson introduction, guided practice, independent practice, lesson wrap-up, and review. Teacher text also includes copies of over 150 student worksheets and answer keys.

The benefits of music and the study of music are numerous—it optimizes brain development, promotes physical coordination, increases cognitive skills, improves social interaction, with a yield of joy and accomplishment. Music offers students many opportunities to grow and flourish as they participate in music-making skills and experiences, analysis through music listening and reading, creativity and musical expression, learn about music history and cultural context, develop their language skills, and are part of an aesthetic community. The GL3 Music course focuses on encouraging tuneful singing, increasing pitch accuracy, developing smooth, rhythmic gross-motor movement, learning quality music, interacting with varied styles of music within a historical context, learning to read music, audiation, and enjoying music from the students’ own as well as other cultural heritages. The course includes units about music in Mexico, Russia, Kenya, Ireland, South Korea, Australia, India, and the United States, as well as lessons for Christmas and Easter, and cultural dances.
Music Teacher Text includes an outline of the goals for the Rafiki Music Curriculum GL1-3, an overview of the benefits of music education, detailed descriptions and explanations of the lesson schedule and components, and an alphabetized Lyrics Appendix. Reading Strategies Handbook (GL3-6) | This handbook organizes an abundance of information about the complexities of reading and expectations for successful Grade Level 3-6 readers, as well as numerous graphic organizers for identifying plot, character, main ideas, cause and effect, prediction skills, vocabulary enrichment, and story mapping.

The Christian classical view of science upholds that science gives us a view of God’s revelation of himself in his creativity and omnipotence. In our approach to science, we aim to know God through his attributes observed in creation and Scripture. Since science is a method of discovery and Grade Level 3 students are naturally inquisitive and eager to discover new things, the Grade Level 3 Science curriculum has been designed to equip teachers to harness those natural traits of the students and guide them in discovering foundational concepts related to scientific investigation and experimentation and the physical, life, and earth sciences.
Science Teacher Text includes an introduction explaining the Christian classical perspective in the sciences, the Science Scope and Content standards for kindergarten through GL8, and biblical worldview principles. Most GL3 Science units include a unit overview that contains unit objectives, materials needed, unit vocabulary, and suggestions to cultivate a love of learning and student curiosity about the topics of study. Unit lessons include student learning objectives, biblical worldview integration, materials needed, an introduction, vocabulary words and definitions, detailed instructional methods, student worksheets, lesson/unit reviews, group and individual assessments, rubrics and answer keys, chants and songs to aid student learning and memorization, and suggestions for lesson extensions and modifications.
Science Student Pages include colorful consumable worksheets, visual aids, and reference materials related to various topics of study in the GL3 Science units and lessons.
Spelling Teacher Text includes an introductory summary of the Christian worldview of language arts and detailed explanations of how to utilize the spelling curriculum and its various components. Each week’s lesson follows the same procedures and includes student objectives, biblical worldview integration, an introduction, and detailed methodology for each lesson component (pre-test, word-sorting, cover-copy-compare, alphabetizing, post-test, lesson extensions and modifications). This text also includes a Spelling Supplement that contains a cumulative word list, revision word lists, and supplemental activities.
