GL1 Art Overview: Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… (Genesis 1:26). 

God created us to be like him. He loved being the Creator, and because humans were made in his image, we also have the gift of artistic activities and expressions. The study of the visual arts, both its techniques and history, stimulates the mind and develops creativity.

This Grade Level 1 Art course is designed to provide students with opportunities to express themselves through the visual arts. Each of the five units focuses on one of the five elements of artline, shape, value, texture, and color. The curriculum is written and designed for anyone who desires to teach, whether an experienced art teacher or a novice. Background information on artists and art history, visual aids, and clear step-by-step methods and instructions are incorporated into each lesson. 

Art Teacher Text (and Art Prints) includes an introductory section explaining the benefits and purposes of studying art, how to use the curriculum, instructions for using the art images and prints, suggestions for providing a classroom atmosphere conducive to creativity, and tips for care of supplies and materials. Each lesson includes student objectives, biblical worldview integration, a list of materials needed, a scripted introduction paired with art images/prints, vocabulary words and definitions, detailed instructions for student activities and assignments, informal assessment questions, and possible extensions or modifications to the lesson. Also includes color prints of art reproductions, instructional material, and examples of student art assignments; reproduced on high quality card stock with a semi-gloss finish. 

Grammar Teacher Text is approximately 30 lessons meant to help students understand the basic parts of speech and types of sentences. Lessons include student objectives, biblical worldview integration, a list of materials needed, an introduction, detailed methods for instruction and activities, lesson assessments and extensions, and reproducible student worksheets.

The goal of Grade Level 1 Maths is to train students to think mathematically. Instruction pursues mastery through systematic sequencing of concepts explored in concrete, pictorial, and abstract terms. Concepts explored include counting to 100 by 1s, 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s, addition and subtraction, story problems, time and money, graphic organizers, estimation, mental math, place value, number bonds, and bar models. 

Each lesson follows the same pattern: calendar, counting, and pattern review, new skill instruction, guided and independent practice, and review. Lessons are designed to be taught without the aid of student worksheets. Instruction is teacher-driven, inviting active student participation.  

Maths Teacher Text provides each lesson in the GL1 Maths curriculum with student objectives, biblical worldview integration, a list of needed materials, assessment, lesson extensions or modifications, and interactive scripts for daily lessons. Each lesson includes an opening review and detailed methods for lesson introduction, guided practice, independent practice, lesson wrap-up, and review.

The benefits of music and the study of music are numerous—it optimizes brain development, promotes physical coordination, increases cognitive skills, improves social interaction, and brings joy. Music offers students many opportunities to grow and flourish as they participate. The Grade Level 1 Music course focuses on encouraging tuneful singing, increasing pitch accuracy, developing smooth, rhythmic gross-motor movement, learning quality music, interacting with varied styles of music, learning to read music, audiation, and enjoying music from various cultural heritages. 

Music Teacher Text includes an outline of the goals for the Rafiki Music Curriculum grades 1 through 3, an overview of the benefits of music education, detailed descriptions and explanations of the lesson schedule and components, and a Lyrics Appendix. Each lesson includes student objectives, biblical worldview integration, list of materials needed, a greeting and closing song, patterns (audio and visual), and instructions for the specific lesson content. 

Music audio files are provided on a USB flash drive containing GL1 Listening selections and Patterns, GL1 Songs, and other public domain music files used in the curriculum. 

Music Demo DVDs | This teacher resource is a set of two DVDs with individual videos demonstrating activities and practices such as head voice singing, rhythm and singing patterns, songs, dance movements, improvisation, and instrumental techniques. 

Music Flash Cards is a set of 53 melodic and rhythmic patterns taught over the course of the year.

Music Prints, produced on high quality cardstock, provide images of each of the composers of the month, as well as other images used in various lessons. 

Reading Teacher Manual provides an overview of the reading program and biblical worldview integration, an explanation of the structure of the reading program including length, pacing, lesson components and methodology, reading new words list, cursive instructions, an explanation of Reading Recap as an evaluation tool, and a phonics scope and sequence by lesson. 

Reading Teacher Text—the lessons in the GL1 reading program focus on phonics (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic), developing students’ phonemic awareness, decoding and encoding, comprehension, fluency, and speaking in complete sentences. The Teacher Text includes detailed instructions for each lesson and its components.

Alphabet cards include 30 cards (8.5” X 5.5”)| 26 letters and four consonant digraphs—each displaying upper and lowercase manuscript letters under a key picture/image and word that begins with the letter/phoneme.

Sound Story Cards are brief, winsome, illustrated stories using several keywords that represent each phonics skill taught. Included are 30 cards—26 letters of the alphabet and four consonant digraphs (ch, sh, th, and wh)

Reading Student Text includes student practice pages with reading sounds, words, and stories from the lesson.

Reading Student Text Teacher copy | This teacher resource is an exact copy of the GL1 Reading Student Text that includes comprehension and discussion questions, explanations, and prompts to promote oral responses and dialogue. All teacher-related content is in red font within the lesson's story.   

Student Cursive Practice Pages | For each lesson there are two days' worth of cursive practice that include individual upper and lower case letters and key words that begin with or incorporate the letter or phoneme taught in that lesson. One key word is provided on a tri-color-coded placement line with red dots to indicate where to begin each word. Student can trace the first word, then practice writing it several times. The backside of each practice page has blank tri-color-coded placement lines for student-specific practice needs.

Reading Recap Lessons | Regularly paced assessments in colorful, activity-based worksheets. For the teacher, Reading Recap is a progress evaluation tool. For students, it is a delightful way to both challenge and encourage them as their reading skills mature. One set is needed for each student. 

Teacher Consonant/Vowel Cards are sets of 26 letters and four consonant digraphs for use during skill instruction and practice. They include vowels, vowel digraphs and diphthongs, consonants, consonant blends and digraphs. Card size is 8.5" X 5.5".

The Christian classical view of science upholds that science gives us a view of God’s revelation of himself in his creativity and omnipotence. In our approach to science, we aim to know God through his attributes observed in creation and in Scripture. As science is a method of discovery and students are naturally inquisitive, the Grade Level 1 Science curriculum was designed to help teachers harness those natural traits of the students and guide them in discovering foundational concepts related to scientific investigation and experimentation. 

Science Teacher Text includes an explanation of the Christian classical perspective in the sciences, K5-GL8 Science Scope and Content standards, and biblical worldview principles. Most GL1 Science units include a unit overview containing unit objectives, materials needed, unit vocabulary, and suggestions to cultivate a love of learning and student curiosity. Unit lessons include student learning objectives, biblical worldview integration, materials needed, an introduction, vocabulary words and definitions, detailed instructional methods, student worksheets, lesson/unit reviews, group and individual assessments, and lesson extensions and modifications.

Science Student Worksheets include engaging, consumable worksheets related to various topics of study in the GL1 Science units and lessons.

Spelling Teacher Text contains 12 units and introductory guidelines regarding spelling instruction, an explanation of the student spelling book, an overview of instructional methods, suggestions for teaching each lesson’s spelling words, a spelling words list, and an end-of-year post-test. Detailed lesson plans also include word lists, spelling pointers, related words, tricky words, dictation, and spelling lesson extensions. 

Student Spelling Text contains a pre-test form for each week’s spelling words, a list of words and spelling pointers, three practice pages on which to use the cover-copy-compare method, and a post-test form labeled by lesson. A bar graph for recording their weekly pre-test and post-test scores is included at the end of the book. 

Teacher’s Calendar Script and Cursive Instruction Manual outlines the seven parts of the daily calendar script (worship, months in a year, seasons in a year, days in the week, weather of the day, number of days in school this year, the seven continents God created) and provides sample scripts. It also explains the benefits of teaching cursive and provides detailed cursive letter-writing instruction.
